Derek Haugen of Builders Appliance Center has helped many Gunlock Homes clients select new appliances for their redesigned and custom-built homes. We recently asked Derek to share his insights about his work as well as what inspires him. Here’s what he had to say.

What are you most proud of about your work

The ability to work beside my clients as we create their DREAM kitchen.

What influences your work?Derek Haugen

In college I studied architecture and have a passion for design and structure. I love being part of the home building process. In my personal life, I really enjoy cooking and entertaining for guests.

What advice do you have for someone looking to buy all new appliances?

First, what type of cooking will you be doing and how often? Check the service reputation of a brand before purchase. It’s also helpful to check rebates and warranties that may be offered for the products. Also, where is the product manufactured? Made in the USA is huge right now.

Which appliances are under-appreciated?

Steam Ovens – You can do everything (defrost, cook, and reheat), and the quality of the food is not compromised like it sometimes is in the microwave. It cooks in a healthy, low fat way without destroying the nutrients in the food. It is much faster than a conventional oven.

Induction Cooktops – Heats pots using an electromagnetic field rather than radiant heat. It is the safest, most energy efficient, and powerful way to cook on a cooktop. There are no issues with the altitude for the home chefs in Colorado.

Favorite place to go in Denver?

Sports Authority Field to see the Broncos win!

Favorite place to visit in Colorado?

I love the mountains. Snowboarding in winter, camping, and mountain biking in the summer.

Last book you couldn’t put down?

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” –Henry Ford

What makes you happiest?

When the family comes out to visit from Chicago and Seattle and they see how great we have it here in Colorado.
